glassboroawardGLASSBORO--The Glassboro Lions Club presented certificates and monetary awards  to two seventh grade students at Glassboro Intermediate School earlier this month, winners of the local portion of the Lions Club's annual "Celebrate Peace" international poster contest. Lions Club representative Carmella Valente presented the awards to first place winner Breanna Seright ($100 prize), and second place winner Sarah McWilliams ($75 prize). According to Valente, the entries will now be considered for regional recognition.

The contest is open to students ages 11-13. Glassboro Intermediate School art teacher Wanda Chudzinski explained that participation in this poster contest fits well into the school district's art curriculum. "Beginning in elementary school, we incorporate surrealism into the curriculum, giving students their first lesson in tying visual imagery to complex concepts like peace. For this contest, they are asked to provide symbols only; they use no words.  This is a real exercise in developing a pictorial image to represent conflict resolution, social commentary and their view of the world," said Chudzinski. Shown in photo along with their prize-winning posters are seventh grade students Sarah McWilliams (second place entry) and Breanna Seright (first place).
