Continue...GLASSBORO – The Cat in the Hat made a stop at Glassboro's Thomas E. Bowe School this Friday, February 3 to help fourth grade students kick off the annual Read Across America celebration. Fourth graders came to the event armed with their favorite Dr. Seuss stuffed toys, and cheered as the Cat danced to some favorite tunes.  To underscore the literary component of the visit, sixth grade boys—all members of the Real Men Read program—read to the younger students in small-groups. Real Men Read is an outgrowth of a national program that brings "real men" into the classrooms to read, including teachers and staff, police and firemen, military, business people and parents.  About 75 sixth grade boys participate in the program, and this year the initiative includes a mentoring component that links the older boys with fourth graders.  The New Jersey Education Association's Cat, played by retired teachers, makes the rounds to schools throughout the state during February and March as part of the National Education Association's Read Across America initiative. During his February 3 visit to Bowe, the beloved Dr. Seuss character, shown with Principal Kriston Matthews, delighted fourth grade students with some of his best dance moves.

Continue...GLASSBORO – The Glassboro Child Development Centers (GCDC) has added Kindergarten to the ranks of youngsters served in after-school programs with the opening of the Rodgers After School Expanded Learning (RASKEL) program on January 17. Activities take place at the J. Harvey Rodgers School Monday through Friday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. every day school is in session. 
Continue...GLASSBORO--The Glassboro Lions Club presented certificates and monetary awards  to two seventh grade students at Glassboro Intermediate School earlier this month, winners of the local portion of the Lions Club's annual "Celebrate Peace" international poster contest. Lions Club representative Carmella Valente presented the awards to first place winner Breanna Seright ($100 prize), and second place winner Sarah McWilliams ($75 prize). According to Valente, the entries will now be considered for regional recognition. 
Continue...GLASSBORO – Glassboro Mayor Leo McCabe has teamed up with Rowan University in a regional initiative to promote literacy among first graders.  McCabe is a lead participant in the second annual Mayor's Book Club, a program that challenges first graders to read at least eight books during a three-month period. McCabe will kick off the regional program which includes seven schools in three counties—with a visit to Glassboro's Dorothy L. Bullock School Library on Monday, January 30 at 9:00 a.m. During his visit, McCabe will read Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements to the first grade students before delivering his challenge: each student who reads at least eight books this spring will win a free book. Additionally, school districts where children read at least 1,000 books will receive $1,000 to purchase books for first-graders.
