cute-animals-1In 1990 the Gloucester County Animal Shelter opened with a humbled beginning and a mission: to find loving homes for stray and unwanted pets. Today their mission is still strong.
Having adopted out more than 25,000 animals over the past 20 years - ranging from the normal cats and dogs to horses, reptiles and other four-legged or fuzzy creatures the Gloucester County Animal Shelter is still in the business of finding loving homes for all kinds of animals.
"Gloucester County is very proud of the work that is done at our animal shelter.  Our staff is compassionate and caring, working hard at finding homes for animals and educating the public about the importance of caring for animals," said Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney.

Freeholder Frank J. DiMarco, liaison to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, said the staff of 29 often invests a lot time with human emotion as they do with animals.  "It is wonderful when we can match a family with a new pet and that is the happy part of the job.  But it can be stressful for our shelter staff when they work with unwanted, abandoned animals or people who have to surrender a pet," DiMarco said.

DiMarco said that the 20th Anniversary Celebration is a great way for the community to learn about the shelter, volunteer opportunities and how to become a foster 'parent' to a pet.

The Gloucester County Animal Shelters 20th Anniversary Open House will be held on Saturday, September 18th from 11 am to 4 pm at the Gloucester County Animal Shelter.

There will be free face painting, clowns, balloons, and refreshments.  Pets are welcome and pet owners can learn about training, veterinary care, and adoption.

A Best Trained Pet Contest will be held at 3 pm.
