hearts copyIt's February and all around are symbols of love and affection, hearts, cupids, valentines. We celebrate this time as an opportunity to express corporately, for one day, that we care. These acts of kindness and generosity whether they be small or large have become very important in our culture. When I was a child, it was very important to make sure everyone in my second grade class received a valentine, whether they were my friend or not. It was the right thing to do. Leaving someone out would hurt their feelings and that was wrong and unnessary, it was a time for kindness. I sometimes wonder how our lives would be changed if we kept these same sentiments in our hearts and minds everyday? I don't mean the purchasing power of Valentine's Day, but the symbolic nature of random acts of kindness. How does it affect us when we engage in the act of giving? Looking around I see amazing women and men generously giving of themselves in volunteer work, fund raising efforts for special needs children, spearheading drives for health related issues, collecting food and clothing for families in need and the list goes on. Good for them and maybe we're not all called to that level of commitment, but we can be mindful of giving a kind word, a smile, a little acknowledgment to those around us. Try it this month and notice what it does for you and others.
