We are mid-way through the month and there is still that feeling of a new beginning. New beginnings, the source of resolutions, visions for the year, goals and objects - whatever term we use, we are ready to begin anew. Then the question arises, how do we keep motivated?
We've all experienced the good intentions we've put forth on January 1 only to find that by January 15 we've begun the guilt ridden process of backsliding. By the end of the month or a little later it may be just a brief, slightly painful memory of something we'll get around to at some vague, later date in the future. What if we dropped the resolution idea and decided to create a vision of what we wanted our lives to look like on Dec. 31, 2012? Ok, so now what? Let's develop a road map or GPS signal to get there. If you want X by the end of the year, what do you need to have in place in 6 months (June)? Got that down? How about 3 months (March)? Breaking it down a little more, where do you need to be at the end of each month? Each week? When we start to get specific on our weekly goals by writing them down and yes, telling our friends/neighbors/family members we set up a level of accountability to keep us focused and motivated. Add to that personal rewards for each of the monthly milestones you've put in place and you are on your way to success. Remember to keep your vision - the end result always in mind. Or as Alvin Toffler so eloquently said, "You've got to think about big things while you're doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction.Anne Lester
